Private Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane) dry eye drops cost from £95 to £130 per bottle at Eye Surgery Clinic, prescribed after a consultant ocular surface assessment as part of a structured evaporative dry eye plan. Miebo is the first and only drop that targets tear evaporation directly, forming a stable monolayer at the surface of the tear film to lock moisture in. A bottle typically lasts several weeks, and the first private prescription includes the assessment that confirms it is the right treatment for your type of dry eye.
What is Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane)?
Most dry eye in the UK is evaporative — the eye makes enough tears, but they evaporate too quickly because the oily (lipid) layer of the tear film is poor, usually due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Traditional artificial tears top up the watery layer but do little to stop evaporation. Miebo takes a different approach: it is a water-free, preservative-free drop of perfluorohexyloctane that spreads into an ultra-thin film across the surface of the tear film, forming a barrier that dramatically slows evaporation between blinks.
Because it contains no water and no preservative, Miebo does not sting on instillation the way some drops do, and it is suitable for frequent long-term use. It is prescribed when evaporative dry eye and MGD symptoms persist despite lid hygiene and standard lubricants, and it works well alongside in-clinic treatments for the underlying gland disease such as LipiFlow and IPL.
Miebo prices
Miebo is a private prescription medicine. The price covers the consultant ocular surface assessment that confirms the diagnosis, the private prescription itself and a structured follow-up. The cost of the medication depends on bottle size and how many bottles your plan requires.
Because Miebo treats the symptom of evaporation while the gland disease continues underneath, most patients do best on a combined plan: Miebo for daily control alongside in-clinic LipiFlow or IPL for the meibomian glands. Other dry eye drop options, such as Brimochol PF for a different indication, are listed across our price list. Severe surface breakdown may need an amniotic membrane graft.
Not sure if Miebo is right for your dry eye? A consultant ocular surface assessment confirms whether your dry eye is evaporative and whether Miebo will help.
Book a dry eye assessmentWhat’s included in the price
A private Miebo plan at Eye Surgery Clinic is consultant-led and covers:
- Consultant ocular surface assessment — dry eye history, symptom scores, tear breakup time, surface staining and meibomian gland evaluation
- Diagnosis of dry eye subtype — confirming evaporative dry eye and MGD so treatment is targeted, not guessed
- Private prescription for Miebo — perfluorohexyloctane, preservative-free, with dosing guidance
- A structured dry eye plan — combining Miebo with lid care and, where needed, in-clinic gland treatment
- Follow-up and symptom review — to check response and adjust the plan
Where dry eye is medically significant, treatment may be covered by UK private insurers with pre-authorisation — see our guidance for insured patients. Staged payment for a combined pathway is available via our finance options.
Are you a candidate?
Miebo is designed for evaporative dry eye driven by a poor lipid layer. Good candidates have:
- Symptoms of dryness, grittiness, burning or fluctuating vision that worsen through the day
- Evaporative dry eye with meibomian gland dysfunction confirmed on examination
- Persisting symptoms despite warm compresses, lid hygiene and standard artificial tears
- A preference for a preservative-free drop suitable for frequent long-term use
- A willingness to treat the underlying gland disease as well, for the best long-term result
Purely aqueous-deficient dry eye (for example in some autoimmune conditions) may need different or additional treatment, and severe surface disease may require more than drops. Your consultant confirms the dry eye subtype before prescribing so the treatment matches the cause.
