What is a retinal detachment?

The retina is the light-sensitive layer lining the back of the eye. A detachment occurs when it separates from the underlying tissue, usually after a tear lets fluid pass behind it. Without prompt repair the detached area stops working and vision is permanently lost. Read more on our retinal detachment condition and treatment pages.

Surgical options

Your surgeon selects the approach based on the detachment. Many cases are repaired the same day where possible. Vitrectomy is the most common technique; scleral buckle or a combined approach may be used depending on the tear pattern and your age.

Yes. A retinal detachment is sight-threatening and the sooner it is repaired the better the chance of saving vision. Sudden flashes, a shower of floaters or a dark curtain spreading across your vision need same-day assessment. If you cannot be seen immediately, attend an eye casualty or call NHS 111.
The main operations are vitrectomy (removing the vitreous gel and sealing the retina with a gas or silicone oil bubble), scleral buckle (a silicone band that supports the retina from outside), and pneumatic retinopexy (a gas bubble injection for selected cases). Your surgeon chooses the technique based on the type and position of the detachment.
Successful surgery reattaches the retina in around 85–90% of cases with one operation, but final vision depends on whether the central macula was detached and for how long. If the macula was still attached, the outlook for vision is very good. Your surgeon will explain the likely outcome for your eye.
