Private lens replacement surgery cost in Cardiff — UK 2026

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) for Cardiff patients costs from £2,800 per eye with a monofocal or EDOF lens, and £3,800–£5,000 per eye with a premium trifocal lens — typically from £6,000 for both eyes, all-inclusive. RLE replaces your natural lens before a cataract can ever form, and is the usual recommendation for patients over 50 whose prescription puts laser eye surgery out of reach.

Refractive lens exchange for Cardiff patients costs from £2,800 per eye with a monofocal or EDOF lens, and £3,800–£5,000 per eye with a premium trifocal lens, or from £6,000 for both eyes in 2026. Prices are all-inclusive of consultation, biometry and refractive workup, the surgery, theatre, your chosen intraocular lens, post-operative drops and follow-up reviews. RLE uses the same technique as cataract surgery, but is performed on a clear natural lens to correct your prescription — which also means you can never develop a cataract afterwards.

Lens replacement prices for Cardiff patients in 2026

RLE is priced per eye, and the lens you choose is the main variable. Because RLE is almost always done on both eyes — the goal is balanced vision without glasses — most patients should budget for the both-eyes figure.

  • Monofocal or EDOF IOL — from £2,800 per eye. Sharp distance vision, with EDOF adding useful intermediate range.
  • Premium trifocal IOL — £3,800–£5,000 per eye. Near, intermediate and distance vision, the greatest spectacle independence.
  • Both eyes — from £6,000. The typical all-in figure for a bilateral trifocal procedure.
  • Toric versions are available across the range where you have significant astigmatism.

If you are over 50 and weighing this against laser, our guide to lens replacement vs laser eye surgery over 50 sets out which procedure tends to win for each prescription profile.

Want to know if RLE is right for your eyes? A consultation includes biometry and a full refractive workup that confirms your suitability and the lens power you need.

Book an RLE assessment

What the price includes

An all-inclusive RLE quote should cover everything in the routine pathway:

  • Consultant refractive surgeon assessment and suitability check
  • Optical biometry, corneal topography and full refractive workup
  • The surgery, theatre, anaesthetic and hospital fees for each eye
  • Your chosen intraocular lens, including premium trifocals
  • Post-operative anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drops
  • One-week and four-week reviews, and a final refraction

When comparing quotes from providers in Cardiff and across South Wales, check whether the price is per eye or for both, whether the premium lens is included or an upgrade, and what the policy is on enhancements. One later cost that sits outside most packages is YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification — around £550 for one eye or £700 for both.

Lens options

Because RLE is elective and your natural lens is still clear, lens choice matters even more than in cataract surgery — you are choosing the vision you will live with, not simply restoring what a cataract took away.

Who lens replacement suits

RLE is usually recommended for patients in their late 40s and beyond, particularly where laser vision correction is not the better option. Typical candidates:

  • Over 50 with presbyopia — needing reading glasses as well as distance correction
  • High long-sightedness (hyperopia) — often outside the safe treatment range for laser
  • High short-sightedness where corneal thickness rules laser out
  • Early lens changes — where a cataract is beginning to form anyway
  • Patients who want a one-and-done solution with no future cataract surgery

RLE is generally not the first choice for younger patients with a stable prescription and healthy corneas, where laser vision correction achieves the same result less invasively. Your consultant will tell you plainly if that applies to you. Read more about the procedure in our guide to private lens replacement surgery.

RLE compared with laser and cataract surgery

Versus laser eye surgery. Laser reshapes the cornea and starts from around £2,400 per eye. It is excellent for younger patients with moderate prescriptions, but it does not address presbyopia permanently and it does not prevent a future cataract. See our laser eye surgery cost guide for the comparison.

Versus cataract surgery. The operation is technically the same. The difference is that cataract surgery removes a clouded lens and is often medically indicated, whereas RLE removes a clear lens electively to correct your prescription. Cataract surgery starts from £2,900 per eye — see cataract surgery prices. If you already have visually significant cataracts, that is the pathway you want, and Cardiff pricing is set out on our private cataract surgery cost in Cardiff page.

Recovery

RLE is a day case under local anaesthetic drops, taking around 20 minutes per eye. Most patients have the second eye a week after the first.

Day of surgery

Vision is hazy for a few hours. Eye shield worn overnight. No driving or heavy lifting. Drops begin.

Days 1–3

Vision clears noticeably. Mild grittiness or watering is normal. Most people return to gentle activity and reading.

Week 1

First post-op review, and usually the second eye is treated. Most patients are back to driving and working.

Weeks 2–6

Vision refines and the brain adapts to a multifocal lens. Night-time halos, if present, settle over this period.

Beyond 6 weeks

Final vision is settled and a final refraction is done. Most trifocal patients no longer need glasses for routine tasks.

0% finance over 12 months spreads a bilateral trifocal procedure to roughly £500 per month. Full representative examples are on our finance page.

Frequently asked questions

Refractive lens exchange for Cardiff patients costs from £2,800 per eye with a monofocal or EDOF lens, and £3,800 to £5,000 per eye with a premium trifocal lens. Both eyes typically start from £6,000. All prices are all-inclusive of consultation, biometry and refractive workup, surgery, theatre, the lens, post-operative drops and follow-up reviews.
The operation is technically the same — the natural lens is removed by phacoemulsification and an intraocular lens is implanted. The difference is the reason for doing it. Cataract surgery removes a lens that has become cloudy and is often medically indicated, while refractive lens exchange removes a clear lens electively to correct your prescription.
No. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens, and once that lens has been replaced with an intraocular implant a cataract cannot form. Some patients later develop posterior capsule opacification, a clouding of the membrane holding the lens, which is treated with a brief YAG laser capsulotomy costing around £550 for one eye or £700 for both.
It depends mainly on your age and prescription. Laser vision correction, from around £2,400 per eye, is usually the better option for younger patients with stable moderate prescriptions and healthy corneas. RLE tends to win for patients over 50, for high long-sightedness, where corneal thickness rules laser out, or where early lens changes are already present.
Usually not. Refractive lens exchange is an elective procedure to correct a prescription, so most private medical insurance policies exclude it in the same way they exclude laser eye surgery. Cataract surgery, by contrast, is generally covered where it is clinically indicated. Most RLE patients self-pay or use 0% finance.
Surgery takes around 20 minutes per eye as a day case under local anaesthetic drops. Vision clears noticeably within a few days and most patients are back to driving and working within a week. Vision continues to refine over two to six weeks as the brain adapts to the new lens, with a final refraction after that.
