Toric lens cataract surgery in the UK in 2026 costs from £3,400 per eye all-inclusive for a toric monofocal lens, £4,200 for a toric EDOF lens and £4,800 for a toric multifocal lens. A toric lens builds astigmatism correction into your intraocular lens, so it is aligned to a precise axis during surgery to give clearer distance vision with less reliance on glasses. Each price covers consultation, biometry, the operation, theatre, your lens and aftercare.

Premium toric

Toric multifocal / trifocal

£4,800

What is a toric lens and who needs one?

Astigmatism means the front of the eye (the cornea) is shaped more like a rugby ball than a football, so light focuses unevenly and vision is blurred at all distances. A toric intraocular lens has extra correction built into it to cancel out that corneal astigmatism, so it is aligned to a precise axis during surgery. Without a toric lens, a patient with significant astigmatism would usually still need glasses for clear distance vision after a standard cataract operation.

Toric lenses are worthwhile when you have around 0.75 dioptres or more of regular corneal astigmatism. Your consultant confirms this with corneal measurements at your assessment.

Toric lens options

We fit toric versions across the lens range, including the Eyhance Toric monofocal-plus and Tecnis Toric II lenses for sharp distance vision, and toric EDOF and toric trifocal lenses for those who also want to reduce their reliance on reading glasses. Read more about the procedure on our toric IOL astigmatism surgery page.

How toric cataract surgery works

The operation is the same 15–25 minute day-case procedure as standard cataract surgery, performed under local anaesthetic drops. The one difference is that the toric lens is rotated to a pre-planned axis so its correction lines up exactly with your astigmatism. Precise biometry and marking make this alignment accurate. If you are weighing lens types, our monofocal vs multifocal IOL guide explains the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

A toric intraocular lens typically adds around £500 to the price of a standard monofocal cataract operation. At our partner clinics a toric monofocal lens is from £3,400 per eye all-inclusive, compared with £2,900 for a standard monofocal lens.
Only if you have corneal astigmatism. A toric lens corrects astigmatism at the same time as removing the cataract, giving sharper distance vision without glasses. Your consultant measures your astigmatism during biometry and will tell you whether a toric lens is worthwhile for your eye.
Standard NHS cataract surgery uses non-toric monofocal lenses, so astigmatism is usually left to be corrected with glasses. Toric and premium toric lenses are generally only available privately or as a self-pay top-up.
The lens itself does not lose its correction, but a small amount of residual astigmatism can remain and the lens can occasionally rotate in the first weeks. If needed, the lens can be repositioned. Most patients achieve a stable, marked reduction in astigmatism.
