What is an adult squint?

A squint (strabismus) is a misalignment of the eyes, where one eye turns in, out, up or down relative to the other. In adults it may be a childhood squint that has returned or increased, or a new squint from a nerve or muscle problem — new-onset double vision should always be assessed. Surgery realigns the eyes by adjusting the muscles that move them. More detail is on our adult squint surgery page.

How squint surgery works

The operation adjusts the extraocular muscles that move the eye — weakening an over-acting muscle (recession) or strengthening a weak one (resection) to rebalance alignment. It takes around 45–60 minutes under general or local anaesthetic as a day case. Adjustable-suture techniques allow fine-tuning of the result in suitable adults.

Frequently asked questions

From £4,500 per eye, all-inclusive of the consultant surgeon, theatre and aftercare. The final price depends on how many eye muscles need adjusting and whether one or both eyes are operated on.
No. As well as straightening the eyes, surgery can relieve double vision, restore comfortable single vision and improve the ability to make eye contact, which has real functional and psychological benefits. Correcting a longstanding squint in adults is recognised as reconstructive, not purely cosmetic.
Squint surgery is a day case. The eyes are red and sore for a couple of weeks and vision may be a little blurred at first. Most people return to desk work within a week or so. Full settling of the alignment and comfort takes a few weeks.
Some squints causing double vision can be managed with prism glasses or, for certain types, botulinum toxin injections. Surgery is the definitive option for a larger or long-standing misalignment. Your consultant will discuss which approach suits you.
