KeraSoft contact lenses for keratoconus

KeraSoft lenses are custom-made soft contact lenses for irregular corneas, designed and made in the UK by UltraVision CLPL. Precision Vision London, the Harley Street clinic that receives keratoconus enquiries through Eye Surgery Clinic, fits them for people with keratoconus, including those who cannot tolerate rigid gas-permeable lenses and patients a few weeks after corneal cross-linking.

In short: KeraSoft lenses are custom-made soft silicone hydrogel contact lenses for irregular corneas, designed and made in the UK by UltraVision CLPL. Precision Vision London describes them as a visual solution for people with keratoconus and as ideal for patients who are intolerant of hard, rigid or gas-permeable lenses. A contact lens corrects your vision while you wear it; it is not a treatment for the keratoconus itself. Moorfields Eye Hospital notes that after corneal cross-linking, the treatment that aims to stop keratoconus getting worse, patients still need to wear spectacles or contact lenses.

What KeraSoft lenses are

UltraVision CLPL, which designs and manufactures the KeraSoft range in the UK, describes KeraSoft as custom-made soft contact lenses for irregular corneas, with a front-surface aspheric design and adjustable peripheries (standard, steep or flat) so the lens can be matched to different corneal shapes. The manufacturer says they give “visual acuity comparable to that of rigid options with all day comfort”. The lenses are made in two materials with different replacement schedules: Definitive 74, replaced every three months, and Contaflex 77, replaced every twelve months. UltraVision also lists KeraSoft Thin and KeraSoft AV as related designs for irregular corneas.

Keratoconus thins and steepens the cornea so that it takes on a more cone-like shape; Precision Vision London notes that it commonly develops during the teenage years or in your twenties. An irregular cornea is why ordinary spectacles and standard soft lenses often fail to give clear vision, and why rigid gas-permeable or specialist lenses are used.

Who KeraSoft lenses suit

Precision Vision London lists three groups on its KeraSoft page:

  • People with keratoconus — the clinic calls the lenses a “visual solution for sufferers of Keratoconus”.
  • Patients who are “intolerant to hard, rigid or gas permeable lenses”.
  • Patients after collagen cross-linking — the lenses “can be worn a few weeks after Collagen Cross Linking”, in the clinic’s words allowing patients to return to normal life quickly.

UltraVision says the lenses are for keratoconus and other irregular corneal conditions. Whether a soft specialist lens, a rigid lens or another option is right for you is decided at the fitting, after corneal mapping.

About keratoconus

Once the cornea is stable, Precision Vision London also lists implantable contact lenses and lens replacement as ways to correct a remaining prescription — see correcting a residual prescription after keratoconus treatment.

Not sure whether specialist lenses, cross-linking or both apply to you? Corneal mapping at a keratoconus assessment is how the clinic decides.

How a fitting works at Precision Vision London

Precision Vision London says its keratoconus assessment includes an eye examination and corneal mapping, scans that build a detailed picture of the shape and thickness of your cornea. KeraSoft lenses are then fitted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist who specialises in contact lenses for irregular corneas; UltraVision describes the process as a trial fitting with a trained practitioner. The clinic says it guides patients through the proper techniques for inserting and removing the lenses.

The clinic’s keratoconus service is led by Dr CT Pillai, its Medical Director, who it says has performed collagen cross-linking since 2007; its KeraSoft page also names Dr Radwan Almousa. Both consult at 22A Harley Street.

What KeraSoft lenses cost

Precision Vision London lists a keratoconus assessment at £250, non-refundable once attended. It does not publish a price for KeraSoft lenses or for the fitting; those are quoted after the assessment, and the clinic offers payment plans. For the treatments that aim to stabilise the cornea, Precision Vision London lists manual corneal cross-linking from £1,750 per eye, laser-assisted cross-linking from £2,000 per eye and corneal implants (INTACS and Kerarings) from £2,575 per eye. Sapphire Eye Care, the other clinic group listed here, does not offer keratoconus treatment.
