Pavblu (aflibercept-ayyh) is a biosimilar of aflibercept — the same anti-VEGF drug sold as Eylea — licensed to treat wet age-related macular degeneration and other retinal conditions. It is given as a quick intravitreal injection that reduces the abnormal, leaking blood vessels behind the retina, stabilising and often improving vision. Because biosimilars are highly similar, clinically equivalent versions of an established biologic, Pavblu delivers the proven benefits of aflibercept at a lower cost. Private Pavblu injections start from £750 each, with course pricing available for the loading and maintenance phases.
What is Pavblu and what is it used for?
Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula — the central part of the retina — and leak fluid or blood, rapidly damaging central vision. Anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) injections are the standard treatment: they switch off the signal that drives those vessels, drying the macula and protecting sight.
Aflibercept is one of the most widely used anti-VEGF drugs. Pavblu is an approved aflibercept biosimilar, meaning it has been shown to match the reference product (Eylea 2mg) in structure, effectiveness and safety. It treats the same conditions — wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion — and is given the same way. For a fuller overview of the condition and its treatment, see our wet AMD treatment page and macular degeneration guide.
Who is suitable?
- Confirmed wet AMD on OCT scan and clinical examination
- Patients wanting prompt private treatment without waiting
- Those seeking a lower-cost aflibercept option for ongoing injections
- People already on aflibercept who wish to continue privately
- Selected diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion cases
New distortion or a blank patch in your central vision? Wet AMD needs prompt assessment — an OCT scan confirms the diagnosis and whether injections can help.

Several anti-VEGF drugs treat wet AMD. Your consultant recommends the right one for your eye, treatment history and how often you can attend.
Other biosimilars are available too, including Yesafili (aflibercept biosimilar) and the ranibizumab biosimilar Byooviz. For a plain-English comparison of treatment paths, read wet AMD vs dry AMD treatment options, and see our pages on Vabysmo and Eylea HD 8mg.
What happens during the injection
An intravitreal injection is a quick, routine outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthetic drops. The appointment takes around 15 minutes; the injection itself takes seconds.
- Anaesthetic and antiseptic drops numb the eye and sterilise the surface.
- A small lid holder keeps the eye gently open and the area is cleaned.
- The Pavblu dose is injected through the white of the eye (sclera) into the vitreous — you may feel brief pressure but not pain.
- The eye is checked and antiseptic drops are given. You can usually go home straight away.
After your injection and treatment schedule
Wet AMD is a long-term condition, so treatment follows a schedule of loading then maintenance injections, guided by OCT scans.
Day of injection
Mild grittiness, a small red patch on the white of the eye and slight watering are normal. Vision may be blurry for a few hours. Avoid rubbing the eye.
First 48 hours
Any irritation settles. Seek advice promptly if you develop increasing pain, marked redness or worsening vision — these are uncommon but should be checked.
Loading phase
Usually three injections about a month apart to bring the wet AMD under control.
Maintenance
Injections continue at extended intervals (often around 8-weekly for aflibercept), tailored to your OCT results using a treat-and-extend approach.
Ongoing monitoring
Regular OCT scans track the macula so treatment intervals can be stretched or shortened to keep the retina dry.
Pavblu cost
Private Pavblu injections are priced per injection, with the drug, the procedure and post-injection drops included. Because wet AMD needs repeated treatment, we offer course pricing across the loading and maintenance phases.
- Per injection: from £750 (aflibercept biosimilar)
- Loading course: typically three injections about a month apart — ask about course pricing
- OCT monitoring scans: quoted with your treatment plan
- Insurance: recognised by major insurers — we handle authorisation
