About Mr Andrew Luff
Andrew Luff began his career in general surgery and moved into ophthalmology in 1988, taking up his first consultant post in 1995. Over more than three decades he has performed in excess of 25,000 cataract and refractive lens procedures and more than 15,000 vitrectomy operations.
He trained to Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) level in both general and ophthalmic surgery, and held the post of Clinical Service Director for Ophthalmology at Southampton General Hospital, where he played a key role in establishing the hospital’s Chair of Ophthalmology. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Chichester, where his research focuses on symptomatic vitreous opacity (persistent floaters) — including a 2022 study of how floaters scatter light, written with a University of Chichester engineer.
He was one of the first surgeons in Britain to use intravitreal injections (medicines injected into the eye to treat conditions such as age-related macular degeneration), and colleagues often refer him complex cases, including implant lens exchanges, eye injuries and eyes that have had difficult first operations. He is the founding consultant of Sapphire Eye Care, reviews grant applications, lectures regularly to optometrists and GPs, and now works full-time in private practice.

My name is Andy Luff. I’m the founding consultant here at Sapphire Eyecare. My particular role is to work with patients who have cataract or vitreoretinal problems. I’ve been practising ophthalmology now since 1988. I took up a consultant post in 1995. I’m very much a high volume surgeon doing many cataract operations and vitreoretinal procedures.
