OptiLight by Lumenis is an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment that targets the root cause of evaporative dry eye — meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Precisely calibrated pulses of light are applied to the skin just below the eyes to reduce inflammation, close the abnormal blood vessels that drive it, lower the population of Demodex mites, and warm and restore the meibomian (oil) glands so your tear film stays stable for longer. A typical course is four sessions, two to four weeks apart, each taking around 10–15 minutes with no needles and no downtime. At our partner clinics OptiLight starts from £350 per session, with a course of four from £1,200. It is most effective when combined with meibomian gland expression and a tailored home-care routine.
What is OptiLight IPL for dry eye?
Most chronic dry eye is evaporative: the meibomian glands along your eyelid margins, which secrete the oily outer layer of the tear film, become blocked and inflamed. Without that oil, your tears evaporate too quickly, leaving the eyes gritty, burning, watery and tired — especially on screens, in air conditioning or while driving.
OptiLight is the first IPL system specifically indicated for the management of dry eye associated with MGD. Applied below the lower eyelids, the light pulses work in several ways at once:
- Reduce inflammation by closing the abnormal surface blood vessels that release inflammatory mediators onto the ocular surface
- Improve gland function by gently warming and softening the hardened meibum so the glands can flow again
- Lower Demodex load — the light reduces the mites that contribute to lid-margin inflammation and blepharitis
- Calm rosacea-type changes in the periocular skin that often accompany MGD
Because it treats the underlying mechanism rather than just lubricating the surface, many patients find the relief lasts far longer than drops alone.
Who is OptiLight for?
- Persistent evaporative dry eye and MGD not controlled by drops and warm compresses
- Gritty, burning, watery or fatigued eyes, worse on screens or in the evening
- Demodex blepharitis and lid-margin inflammation
- Ocular rosacea
- Contact lens intolerance driven by a poor tear film
OptiLight is not suitable for everyone — it is avoided in very dark or recently tanned skin, during pregnancy, with certain photosensitising medications, and in some eye and skin conditions. A dry eye assessment confirms whether it is right for you and rules out other causes. If your dry eye is driven mainly by gland blockage, a thermal treatment such as iLux or LipiFlow may be recommended alongside or instead of IPL.
Tired of dry, gritty eyes that drops don't fix? A dry eye assessment maps your tear film and gland health and shows whether OptiLight is right for you.
Book a dry eye assessmentYour OptiLight treatment course
OptiLight works progressively, so it is delivered as a short course rather than a single visit. Most patients have four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, often with gland expression at each visit.
What happens during a session
OptiLight is quick, comfortable and needle-free. There is no anaesthetic and you can drive yourself home and return to work straight afterwards.
- Protective shields are placed over your eyes and a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area below the eyes.
- The clinician moves the OptiLight handpiece across the cheeks and lower lids, delivering a series of calibrated light pulses. You feel a warm, light snapping sensation.
- The gel is removed and, where indicated, the meibomian glands are gently expressed to release the softened oil.
- A soothing moisturiser and sunblock are applied. The whole visit takes around 10–15 minutes.
Aftercare and what to expect
There is essentially no downtime. Mild redness or warmth in the treated skin can occur briefly. Simple aftercare protects and extends your results:
Same day
Return to normal activities immediately. Apply the sunblock provided and avoid direct sun on the treated skin.
First week
Continue your prescribed drops and warm-compress or lid-hygiene routine. Avoid sunbeds and heavy sun exposure.
Across the course
Symptoms typically ease progressively after the second or third session as the glands recover and inflammation settles.
Long term
Benefits can last many months. A maintenance session every 6–12 months plus good home care keeps symptoms controlled.
Other ocular-surface options that may form part of your plan include Miebo drops, punctal plugs, scleral lenses and, for Demodex blepharitis, Xdemvy drops.
