AI biometry for precision IOL calculation

The accuracy of your cataract result depends on one measurement above all: choosing the right power of intraocular lens. AI-assisted biometry combines high-resolution swept-source OCT scanning with modern artificial-intelligence lens formulas to predict your post-operative vision more precisely than ever before.

AI biometry for cataract surgery uses high-resolution swept-source optical scans of your eye, analysed by artificial-intelligence intraocular lens (IOL) formulas, to calculate the exact lens power needed for your target vision. By combining precise optical measurements with AI prediction models trained on large surgical datasets, it improves the chance that you land on your refractive target first time — reducing the need for glasses and the risk of a surprise result. At our partner clinics, AI-assisted biometry and lens planning are included in every cataract surgery assessment at no extra charge.

What is biometry and IOL calculation?

During cataract surgery your eye’s clouded natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens. That replacement lens has to be the right strength — just like spectacles, but permanently inside the eye. Biometry is the set of precise measurements (the length of the eye, the curvature of the cornea, the depth of the anterior chamber and more) that feed an IOL power formula. The formula then predicts which lens power will give you your desired vision, whether that is sharp distance vision or a fuller range with a premium lens.

Older formulas relied on a handful of measurements and theoretical optics. Modern AI-assisted formulas are trained on tens of thousands of real surgical outcomes, learning subtle patterns — particularly in unusual eyes — that traditional equations miss. The result is tighter refractive accuracy across the whole range of eye shapes, including very long, very short and previously laser-treated eyes.

Where accuracy matters most

  • Long and short eyes — high myopes and hyperopes where classical formulas drift
  • Post-laser eyes — patients who have had LASIK, PRK or SMILE, where corneal measurements are altered
  • Astigmatism — precise corneal mapping for toric IOL alignment
  • Premium lensesEDOF and multifocal lenses demand a bullseye refractive result to perform
  • Refractive lens exchange — precision is even more critical in RLE where there is no cataract driving the decision

Planning premium-lens cataract surgery? AI biometry gives your surgeon the accuracy that premium lenses need to deliver their full benefit.

Why AI-assisted lens calculation?

No single formula is perfect for every eye. Our approach cross-checks several modern methods and applies AI prediction to converge on the most reliable lens power for your individual eye.

AI does not replace your surgeon — it informs them. Every calculated result is reviewed by your consultant, who matches the lens power and lens type to your eye anatomy and your goals. The full range of implant lens options is available, and your plan covers both eyes together where you are having bilateral surgery, including same-session ISBCS.

What happens during your biometry scan

Biometry is quick, painless and completely non-invasive. It is done at your assessment visit, before any decision about surgery is finalised.

  1. You rest your chin on a support and look at a target light — nothing touches your eye.
  2. The swept-source OCT scanner captures the length of your eye, corneal curvature, chamber depth and lens position in seconds.
  3. The measurements are run through multiple AI and modern optical formulas to calculate candidate lens powers.
  4. Your consultant reviews and cross-checks the results, discussing your target vision and any astigmatism correction.
  5. A final lens plan — power, type and, for toric lenses, axis — is agreed with you.

After your scan

There is no recovery from biometry itself — it is just a scan. What follows is your personalised surgical plan. Our consultation guide explains the whole visit, and the patient journey page walks through every step from assessment to aftercare.

At your assessment

Biometry scan and full eye examination. No drops needed for the scan itself, though your pupils may be dilated for other checks.

Same visit

Your consultant reviews the AI-calculated lens options with you and answers your questions about target vision.

Before surgery

Your final lens power, type and axis are confirmed. Measurements may be repeated if anything has changed.

On the day

Your planned lens is implanted. Premium and toric lenses are positioned to the calculated specification.

At review

Your achieved result is checked against the target — the accuracy of the original biometry is reflected in your vision.

Cost

AI-assisted biometry and IOL planning are included in your cataract package at our partner clinics — there is no separate charge for the technology. You pay only for your chosen procedure and lens.

  • Cataract surgery: from £2,900 per eye (monofocal), with premium lenses priced on the cataract price list. AI biometry is part of every package.
  • Insurance: recognised by Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, Cigna, WPA and others — see insured patients.
  • Finance: 0% options available — see our finance page.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI biometry for cataract surgery?
AI biometry combines high-resolution swept-source optical scans of your eye with artificial-intelligence intraocular lens formulas to calculate the exact lens power you need. The AI formulas are trained on large datasets of real surgical outcomes, which improves accuracy — especially in unusual eyes — and increases the chance of hitting your refractive target first time.
Is AI biometry more accurate than traditional IOL calculation?
For many eyes, yes. Modern AI-assisted formulas learn subtle patterns from tens of thousands of real outcomes that classical theoretical formulas miss, giving tighter refractive accuracy across the range of eye shapes. The benefit is greatest in long, short or previously laser-treated eyes and when planning premium or toric lenses, where precision matters most.
Does the biometry scan hurt?
No. Biometry is a non-contact optical scan — you simply rest your chin on a support and look at a target light while the scanner takes its measurements in a few seconds. Nothing touches your eye and no anaesthetic is needed for the scan itself.
Do I have to pay extra for AI biometry?
No. AI-assisted biometry and IOL power planning are included in every cataract surgery package at our partner clinics. There is no separate charge for the technology — you pay only for your chosen procedure and lens.
Can AI biometry help if I have had laser eye surgery before?
Yes. Eyes that have had LASIK, PRK or SMILE have altered corneal measurements that make IOL calculation harder with older formulas. AI-assisted methods and dedicated post-laser formulas improve accuracy for these eyes, and your consultant cross-checks several approaches before confirming your lens power.
