Benenden Health does not work like standard private medical insurance. It is a healthcare mutual: for a flat monthly membership fee, members can access services such as a 24/7 GP and mental health helpline, and — after a qualifying membership period and subject to available funds — discretionary services including private diagnostics (when the NHS wait is over three weeks, up to a cost limit Benenden states on its website) and selected surgical treatment. Surgical treatment is one of those discretionary services: Benenden Health’s own procedure list (correct as of 24 July 2026) names cataracts as the only eye surgery it supports: phacoemulsification of cataract with lens implant, one eye or both, standard monofocal lens only, plus YAG laser capsulotomy where Benenden funded the cataract treatment. Premium lenses are not on the list, so a member who wants an extended-depth-of-focus or multifocal lens, or treatment at a clinic Benenden has not approved, pays privately — Sapphire Eye Care lists standard cataract surgery from £2,900 per eye. Always confirm your current entitlement directly with Benenden Health before booking.
What is Benenden Health?
Benenden Health is a long-established, not-for-profit healthcare mutual. Unlike risk-rated private medical insurance (PMI), everyone pays the same flat monthly membership fee regardless of age or health. In return, members can call on a range of health services — some available from day one, and others (the discretionary medical services) available once you have been a member for a qualifying period and where mutual funds allow.
Because benefits are discretionary rather than a contractual insurance promise to pay, Benenden decides what it can help with on a case-by-case basis. This is an important distinction when you are planning a specific operation like cataract surgery.

Benenden Health’s own procedure list (correct as of 24 July 2026) names cataracts as the only eye surgery it supports: phacoemulsification of cataract with lens implant, one eye or both, standard monofocal lens only, plus YAG laser capsulotomy where Benenden funded the cataract treatment. Benenden says you can ask after six months of membership (24 months in Northern Ireland) when your NHS wait for surgery is more than five weeks; approval is discretionary, you need a consultant diagnosis and referral first, and Benenden pays the authorised consultant and hospital in its network directly. It cannot fund treatment arranged before authorisation or at a hospital it has not approved. Its membership pages also list:
- Medical diagnostics after six months of membership when the NHS wait is over three weeks, up to a cost limit stated on Benenden’s website
- A 24/7 GP helpline from day one of membership
What the list does not include: premium intraocular lenses such as an extended-depth-of-focus, multifocal or trifocal lens (the cataract entries say standard monofocal lens only), a procedure on the same body area within the previous two years, and anything Benenden has not authorised in advance. Benenden says it changes the list from time to time without notice, so the only reliable answer for your membership is to ask Benenden Health directly before you commit to treatment.

If Benenden does not authorise your operation, or you want a premium lens or a clinic of your choice, these are the routes.
If you hold conventional private medical insurance as well as Benenden membership, your PMI is usually the route that pays for surgery.
