What is one-stop cataract surgery?
A traditional private cataract pathway splits care across two or more appointments: a first visit for assessment and measurements, then a separate surgery date. A one-stop pathway compresses that into a single visit — your consultant confirms the diagnosis, performs the biometry scans that measure your eye for its intraocular lens (IOL), discusses your lens options, and carries out the surgery the same day when you are a suitable candidate.
It is designed for people who want to avoid repeat travel and waiting — those coming from further afield, working around a busy schedule, or simply keen to move from diagnosis to clear vision as quickly as safely possible. Not everyone is suitable for same-day treatment; complex eyes, certain medications or additional testing may mean a short staged pathway is safer, and your surgeon will always advise honestly.

The lens is permanent and determines how well you will see — and at what distance — for the rest of your life. Your consultant discusses the full range before you proceed, so a same-day plan never means a rushed choice.

Your same-day visit, step by step
A one-stop day is planned so nothing is rushed and every safety check is completed before you consent to surgery. Where same-day treatment is not right for you, the assessment still happens and surgery is simply booked for the earliest suitable date.
- Consultation & examination — your consultant confirms the cataract, checks the health of the rest of the eye, and reviews your medications and general health.
- Biometry & scans — precise measurements calculate the correct IOL power for each eye.
- Lens discussion & consent — you choose your IOL with realistic expectations explained, and give written informed consent.
- Surgery — performed under local anaesthetic eye drops. A tiny 2.2–2.8mm incision, phacoemulsification to remove the cloudy lens, and your chosen IOL implanted. 15–25 minutes per eye.
- Second eye, same session — where suitable, the second eye is treated immediately afterwards using fresh instruments and a separate sterile set-up (ISBCS).
- Rest & home — you rest for 30–60 minutes, then go home the same day with your eye shield and drops.

Recovery week-by-week
Most patients notice clearer vision within hours, but full healing takes about a month. Treating both eyes in one session means a single, combined recovery rather than two.
Day of surgery
Vision is hazy for a few hours. Eye shield worn for the first night. No driving, no heavy lifting. Eye drops begin.
Days 1–3
Vision begins to clear noticeably. Mild grittiness or watering is normal. Most return to gentle activities and reading.
Week 1
First post-op review. Most patients are back to driving, working and walking — no swimming or eye rubbing yet.
Weeks 2–4
Vision continues to refine. Eye drops continue. New glasses prescription (if needed) at week 4–6.
Beyond a month
Final vision is settled. Most patients describe clarity they haven't had in years, in both eyes at once.
Most patients use eye drops for a few weeks after surgery. Ask your surgeon about dropless cataract surgery, where the medication is delivered during the operation so many patients need no drops at all.
